10 Interesting Facts About Weed That Will Blow Your Mind
How much do you actually know about marijuana?
The legalisation of ganja opened up the possibility of research, so luckily there is a wealth of interesting facts about weed.
We have been smoking the sticky herb for over 2,500 years, so we’ve had more than enough time to come up with some interesting marijuana facts.
Are you ready to have your mind blown? (If not, go have a bong rip and come back when your mind is more blowable).
Without any more delay, let's jump into the 10 most interesting facts about weed.
Fact Number One: Only female cannabis plants can get you high
All the cannabis buds that you have ever smoked have come from female plants. Only the female plant produces enough of the good bud to actually get you going.
They also have the highest content of trichomes, cannabinoids, and terpenes that give cannabis its restorative potency. Male plants pollinate the females, so both are equally important for the process.
I once met an old marijuana grower who had a funny comparison for growing cannabis. He said that good buds grow because the female plants are starved of the male's attention.
His reasoning was that the female cannabis plant essentially gets horny and produces beautiful, big flowers to attract more pollen from the male plants. The longer it goes without any pollen, the bigger and more beautiful it gets!
Fact Number Two: Some people are allergic to cannabis
I don’t think I could imagine an allergy worse than this, and I was allergic to everything. But yes, it’s true; some people are allergic to cannabis.
Fortunately, the allergy affects a very small percentage of the population. If you are one of the unlucky ones, I am really sorry.
Most allergic reactions to the icky stickiness are pretty mild, ranging from itchy, swollen eyes to skin rashes. The most severe reactions were anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening response to allergies.
However, don’t worry too much about this; you have a better chance of winning the lotto.
Fact Number Three: Cannabis is legal in North Korea
If you were looking for a reason to take a holiday in North Korea, then here it is (you won’t find many other reasons to go). North Korea doesn’t consider weed a drug, so the growth and cultivation are completely legal.
However, the transportation and use of it are still illegal, but penalties are not likely to be very harsh.
If you want to go somewhere with legal marijuana, I think Amsterdam might be a better option than North Korea. Unless you want a thrill.
Fact Number Four: You can’t lethally overdose on weed
No matter what your parents, teachers, or governments tell you, you cannot die from a marijuana overdose.
There haven’t been any reported deaths, so if you smoke too much, don’t start to panic and think you are dying. If your heart is racing, it's probably a bit of anxiety and not a heart attack.
This doesn’t mean you can’t die while on marijuana. Operating heavy machinery, driving, and doing stupid things while stoned is not the best idea.
It’s estimated that you would have to consume 1500 pounds (680kg) of cannabis in fifteen minutes to induce an overdose, so smoke away!
Fact Number Five: Men and women experience cannabis differently
I’ve always wondered why my girlfriend has the ability to outsmoke me even though she is almost half my weight. It turns out that the effects of weed differ between men and women.
In a study done on rats, researchers found female rats have a higher sensitivity to the herb.
It appears that higher oestrogen levels allow women to develop tolerance quicker than men. But they are also more likely to suffer from negative side effects like paranoia, anxiety, and dependency.
The experts recommend women smoke less potent weed and stay away from concentrates. I would say to do whatever floats your boat.
Fact Number Six: Chocolate produces similar euphoria to cannabis
If you need a reason to go and buy chocolate to munch on, here’s a good one for you. Chocolate contains psychoactive elements like tryptophan and phenylethylamine.
Both of these help regulate your mood, which can lead to euphoric feelings similar to those of marijuana.
Dark chocolate is most likely to provide these effects, but experts agree the effects work better with chocolate you actually enjoy.
Fact Number Seven: Marijuana can kill cancer cells
There has been a lot of debate about this fact, but there finally seems to be some pretty good evidence.
According to the research, THC and many other cannabinoids can help slow the growth and even shrink cancer cells.
Weed has been a saving grace for many of those suffering from cancer and the effects of treatment.
We’ve long known it can help with pain and discomfort; now we know it can shrink cancer cells too!
Fact Number Eight: Hemp can help with deforestation
There are many reasons why we should go green, such as helping the planet be more green.
If you haven’t realised just yet, there are over 50,000 uses for hemp, ranging from paper to clothing.
It seems humans have forgotten that we need trees to clean our air and breathe. Hemp is much better for the environment, and it could replace the trees cut down for paper.
All it would take is a lot of money and a bit less corporate greed…
Fact Number Nine: Weed is more potent these days
My uncle is a heavy weed smoker, and I recall a time when he was bragging about how much more they used to smoke than us kids (I was nineteen).
I think he would swallow his words now since the average potency of weed has increased over time.
The average potency in 1995 was four percent. In 2018, it had risen to almost fifteen percent. This means that as time goes on, we are going to keep getting higher than our forefathers.
Fact Number Ten: There are more dispensaries in Colorado than Starbucks, McDonald's, and 7-Eleven combined
This is a crazy one, but it appears the number of weed dispensaries in Colorado outnumbers Starbucks, 7-Eleven, and McDonald's.
It's crazy because you are never (most of the time) less than 3 miles from a McDonald's in the USA. So in Colorado, the dispensary is even closer!
This fact proves that people prefer weed over coffee, McDonald’s, and 7-Eleven, or that it just makes the others taste so much better.
Honestly, a stoner problem may be easier to handle than an obesity situation. You are more likely to overdose on food anyway.
